Happy New Year!

Investors start 2008 on shaky ground.

.

Investors started the year 2008 with the same concerns as in 2007.  The credit crisis, banking sector home loans problem, weak housing, weak dollar, and higher oil prices remained major ongoing concerns for the investors this week.  Surprise reduction in manufacturing for the month of Dec-07, rise in Dec-07 unemployment numbers from 4.7% to 5%, and oil prices crossing $100/barrel shattered any hope for markets to go up.  The S&P500 dropped 56 points, the DOW dropped 462 points and the NASDAQ dropped 149 points for Jan 2-4, 2008.

.

According to the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), US manufacturing activity declined unexpectedly in December to 47.7 from 50.8 in November.  A reading below 50 is considered a declining manufacturing activity and a reading above 50 is considered as a growing manufacturing activity.  December ISM number of 47.7 raises concern that credit crisis, weak housing, higher oil prices are all contributing to a economic slowdown.

Year 2007 in review

How did year 2007 do for the investors?

  • For 2007, the NASDAQ gained 9.8%, outpacing the S&P500 and the DOW which were up 3.5% and 6.4%, respectively.  See the monthly average graphs below for the S&P500, the DOW, and the NASDAQ.

  • Dollar weakened against all the currencies that we tracked in 2007, see the chart below.  The worst decline for US dollar was over 15% against the Canadian dollar.

  • How did the three stocks, Disney (DIS), Kellogg (K), and McDonald’s (MCD), that you asked us to track do in 2007?  McDonald’s(MCD) stock gained over 34% or gain of $15 per share, not bad.  Kellogg (K) gained 5% or over $2.5 per share.  Disney turned out to be a dog, lost 6% or close to $2 per share.  Over all, if you bought these three stocks, one a piece, you gained over $15 in 2007 or over 12%!
