Investors dismiss interest rate cut!
The Federal Reserve cut both, fed funds rate and discount rate by a quarter percentage point on December 11th to 4.25% and 4.75% respectively. The Federal Reserve Bank’s 0.25% cut in the interest rate this week, did not help much to calm the jittery investors. The S&P500 dropped 37 points, the Dow dropped 284 points and the NASDAQ dropped 75 points for the week ending December 14th, 2007.
Investors were hoping for an half percentage point cut by the Feds to agressively address the growing credit crisis and banking sector home loans problem which could spill over to impact the larger economy.
Later in the week, the Consumer Price Index (CPI, measure of retail prices) rose 0.8%, more than the 0.6% increase most experts were expecting. In addition, the Producer Price Index (PPI, measure of wholesale prices), rose 3.2%, the biggest jump in 34 years! The PPI increase was mainly due to surging oil prices. The continuous rise of CPI and PPI can cause inflationary situation which Feds will have to watch closely.
