The DOW manages to extend gains from last week

.

The DOW managed to gain over 50 points this past week.  This gain followed almost 600 points jump from the previous week.  The key piece of positive news this week came from the Housing Starts and Building permits which saw a surprising increase for the month of February.  The increase in the Housing Starts and Building Permits number can be a sign of improvement in the housing market which has been struggling for a while.  If sustained, it could stimulate the housing related jobs, purchase of goods which go into houses, and finally the economy (GDP).

.

The DOW closed up 55 points, or 0.7%, the S&P500 was up 10 points, or 1.3%, and NASDAQ up 12 points, or 0.8%, for the week ending March 20th.  Year-To-Date (YTD) S&P500 is -14.9%, DOW is -17.1% and NASDAQ is -7.6%. Oil closed at $51.06 per barrel this week.

In a major move, the Federal Reserve announced –

a) Decision to purchase up to an additional $750 billion worth Mortgage-Backed-Securities bringing the total to $1.25 trillion this year.

b) It will also increase the purchase of debts (loans) by up to $100 billion to a total of $200 billion.

c) To help improve the credit markets, it will purchase up to $300 billion of Long Term Treasury Securities over the next six months.

What are Treasury Securities?

Treasury Securities are interest bearing certificates issued by the US Department of Treasury with a promise to repay a sum of money (the principal) plus interest at specified dates in the future.  Treasury Securities issued by the US government for a short term (or less than a year) are called Treasury Bills or T-Bills.

.

Treasury Securities are one of the ways the US government finances its own money needs.  So far the US National debt is over $11 Trillion. The top three countries holding US Treasuries are China (over $700 Billion), Japan (over $600 Billion) and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) (over $200 Billion).
