The DOW up almost 600 points!
.
The week ended with the highest rise in stock prices since November 2008. The week started with news from Citigroup (Ticker C) that its financial performance was satisfactory and it may not need additional help from the government. This news helped its stock as its stock had fallen below a dollar. Investors took that as a sign of bottoming out of the banking credit crisis for the large banks. Drug maker Merck (Ticker MRK) announced its plan to acquire (merge) rival Schering-Plough Corporation (Ticker SGP) in a deal worth $41 billion. The combined company will be called Merck. Investors took this news as yet another positive sign that acquisition may be heating up because of the low stock prices.
While the market did go up this week, there was more bad news for job cuts. United Technologies (Ticker UTX) announced that it will cut 11,600 jobs. Investors remain concerned about the financial markets, its greed, incompetence, and entitlement mentality by the very people who created this mess and now are calling themselves talented worthy of bonuses from the taxpayer bailout money.
.
The DOW closed up 598 points, or 9.0%, the S&P500 was up 76 points, or 11.1%, and NASDAQ up 147 points, or11.4%, for the week ending March 13th. Oil closed at $44.41 per barrel this week
